Biography
Overview
Matti Carter is a composer and pianist whose musical practice is rooted in the piano. He began studying the instrument at a young age, exploring classical repertoire and developing a deep understanding of composition through study and performance. Over time, this foundation has informed his work across a range of musical contexts, shaping his approach to structure, atmosphere, and musical storytelling.
Background
Matti Carter began studying piano in 1998 at the age of six. Early exposure to the classical repertoire, particularly the music of Frédéric Chopin, had a lasting influence on his musical language. His interest in composition emerged soon after, and by the age of eight he was already creating original works using early MIDI composition and notation software.
Between 1998 and 2012, Matti attended several music schools in Helsinki Finland, studying piano, music theory, and composition. During this time, he also participated in multiple piano masterclasses organised by the Sibelius Academy. In 2012, his period of national service provided an opportunity to further develop his accompaniment skills while performing as a pianist with the Kaarti Military Band.
In 2013, Matti moved to Tampere to study music composition, with classical piano as his main instrument. He obtained a Bachelor of Music degree from Tampere University of Applied Sciences in 2017.
Following his formal studies, Matti began focusing more intensively on piano composition. This period of concentrated work led to the creation of his debut piano album, White Keys Omnibus (2020), a collection of seven original piano pieces, each composed in a different white key.
