Hillside Frolic Illusion

Hillside Frolic Illusion moves through playful motion and gentle transformation, where familiar ideas seem to repeat, yet never quite in the same way. What feels constant is quietly reshaped, creating the sense of an unfolding illusion that ultimately resolves into something recognisable.

Independent Projects

Matti Carter - Firelight Polonaise

Firelight Polonaise is my first polonaise for piano. Inspired by Chopin, I set out to create a piece that evokes his spirit while incorporating my own modern voice. Composed in 2019, it has remained a favorite to play, with its technical challenges – wide leaps in the left hand and fast runs in the right – offering both excitement and intensity. It was first recorded in 2020 at the Music Hall in Helsinki.

Matti Carter - Shooting The Rapids

Shooting the Rapids was composed in 2019 and first recorded by me in 2020 at the Music Hall in Helsinki. True to its title, the music moves swiftly and melodically, evoking the sensation of navigating turbulent waters. Throughout the piece, multiple sections and key changes unfold, creating a dynamic journey that ultimately returns to the original theme, giving a sense of resolution after the musical currents.

Matti Carter - Skazka (Fairytale)

Based on a violin composition I wrote at the age of 16, this piece later evolved into a piano work, originally recorded by pianist Viktor Pellia in 2020 at the Music Hall in Helsinki. The music evokes a fairytale-like atmosphere, with hints of Russian-inspired motifs. In recognition of its character, Viktor Pellia titled the piece “Skazka”, the Russian word for “fairytale.”

Matti Carter - Running Free

Running Free is a piece born from my exploration of evolving musical ideas and textures. Its ABAB-coda structure takes the listener on a journey, culminating in part B where the right hand unfolds intricate counterpoint – two melodies weaving simultaneously, creating a sense of motion and freedom. The interplay of voices gives the piece a lively, layered energy, reflecting its title. It was first recorded in 2020 at the Music Hall in Helsinki by pianist Viktor Pellia.
